Windows 7 Error – “Cannot boot from CD code 5”

Issue:  On some older computers, when trying to install Windows 7 by booting from the DVD, you will get a boot failure with “cannot boot from CD code 5”.

Description:  Microsoft has changed the way the DVD boots from Vista.  This change causes some computer BIOS to fail to boot.  This seem especially the case with AMD computers.

Resolution:  The easy work-a-round is to boot off a Vista DVD and choose Recovery, then advanced options, then command prompt.  Once at the command prompt switch out the DVD for the Windows 7 DVD and run setup.exe from the sources directory.
